What are error codes and what can you do about them?
What is a tachograph error code?
A tachograph error code is a message indicating that something is not functioning properly within the tachograph. This could be a warning—such as a nearly full memory card—or a malfunction, such as an issue with the speed sensor or communication with the driver card.
Common Error Codes on VDO and Stoneridge Tachographs
VDO Error Codes:
001 – Device malfunction
A general or serious hardware defect has occurred. This means a part of the tachograph is not working properly or is defective. Turn off the ignition and restart the system. If the error persists, have the vehicle checked at a workshop.
019 – Power interruption
Check if the tachograph wiring is still properly connected. Turn off the ignition and restart. If the error remains, have the vehicle diagnosed at a workshop.
023 – Security fault
Error verifying the motion sensor while active, or error during the pairing procedure. Turn off the ignition and restart. If the issue continues, consult a workshop.
024 – No signal from speed sensor
This could indicate a faulty sensor or wiring.
028 – Driving without a card
Check if a valid driver or workshop card is inserted into the tachograph. Insert a valid card if necessary.
030 – Speed too high
The programmed maximum speed (Vset) has been exceeded for longer than 60 seconds.
039 – No printer paper
The tachograph is out of printer paper. Insert a new paper roll.
048 – Invalid card
The inserted card is expired or invalid. Clean the card and try again. If the error persists, replace the card.
Stoneridge Error Codes:
02 – Invalid card combination
An invalid card combination has been detected—for example, a company and a workshop card together.
03 – Time overlap
The last recorded removal time of the inserted driver card, as read from the card, is later than the UTC time of the tachograph.
04 – Driving without the correct card
Stop and insert the correct card into the tachograph, or remove the incorrect card and insert the right one.
07 – Speed too high
The vehicle has exceeded the maximum allowed speed. This condition has been active for at least 60 seconds.
08 – Power interruption
Power supply to the motion sensor has been interrupted for more than 200 milliseconds.
09 – Motion sensor error
Data from the motion sensor is incorrect. The tachograph is receiving speed values from the sensor without receiving pulses.
What to do when you see an error code?
-
Read the code carefully: Note down the exact error number.
-
Contact your workshop: Especially for recurring or unknown codes.
-
Avoid DIY fixes: The tachograph system is officially certified. Unauthorized modifications may lead to fines
